NorthWoods is busy this year with several new Nordic ski initiatives. Our 18 kilometer Nordic ski trail network (and 8K of snowshoe trails) is currently open to the public. Be sure to read the most up-to-date trail report for the latest conditions. The NorthWoods trail system received considerable attention this summer from our Conservation Corps teams, including several new backcountry areas and bridges. Our trails cover variety of terrain and can be used regularly throughout the winter by local school recreation programs as well as visiting skiers and snowshoers.
In addition to maintaining our own trails at the NorthWoods campus, our staff is tending the popular Willoughby State Forest Nordic ski trails on Bartlett Mountain and Mt. Hor in Westmore. The Willoughby Trails are located along the CCC Road and include roughly 12 kilometers of skate and classic groomed skiing. The area is popular with early season skiers due to its elevation and has been ably managed in the past by the Memphremagog Ski Touring Foundation. This winter, in partnership with Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR), NorthWoods will be grooming the Willoughby Trails 2-3 times a week, weather permitting, through March.
Also new this winter is an exciting partnership with Q Burke Mountain Resort. NorthWoods will offer rentals, lessons, and guided outings at Q Burke’s Dashney Ski Center. NorthWoods staff will be based out of the new Hotel and Conference Center, Thursdays through Sundays, and offer programs to visitors and hotel guests.
