Trail Guidelines for Mud Season

It is mud season in the Northeast Kingdom and NorthWoods is discouraging hikers from damaging local trail during this transitional time of year. In northern Vermont mud season comes early and ends late, often extending into June—much later than other parts of the state. The impacts of hiking during mud season are significant and they should be minimized during any wet spell, not just in the spring. Middle Mountain Trail Route Now Open

NorthWoods is pleased to announce a major milestone in NEK trail work – the completion of the Middle Mountain Trail in Warren’s Gore and Avery’s Gore. The project is part of a long range plan and partnership involving NorthWoods, Green Mountain Club, Vermont Forests, Parks and Recreation, and the private timberland owners to develop hiking trails on the former Champion Lands (now known as the Kingdom Heritage Lands). Thanks to Vermont PBS, NorthWoods is featured in a new season episode of Vermont Outdoor Journal. Program host Lawrence Pyne explores the trail building process while hiking the new Middle Mountain Trail being built by the NorthWoods Conservation Corps Backcountry Crew in the remote forests of Avery's Gore. The program demonstrates how multiple partners, including NorthWoods Stewardship Center, Green Mountain Club, Vermont Forest, Parks and Recreation and Plum Creek Timber Company have come together to develop trails on the Kingdom Heritage Lands in far northeastern Vermont. For winter 2015, our goal is to provide easier access to more people to the outdoors, and specifically to the NorthWoods outdoors, in a medium of winter travel that suits the landscape and all sorts of outdoor enthusiasts. Interpretive Signage Enriches Spitzer Forest

Brighton and NorthWoods Collaborate to Conserve Bluff Mountain Trail

Sitting just outside the Village of Island Pond in the Town of Brighton, Bluff Mountain has afforded stunning views to generations of local hikers who have climbed to its lookout over the Village and Pond below.
