Grooming Season Comes to a Close

With the end of the 2018 ski season fast approaching, trail grooming has been suspended for the Willoughby State Forest and NorthWoods Stewardship Center trails. Thank you so much for your support this season and a special thanks to the NEKBC for bringing a new user group to the Willoughby State Forest trail system. Willoughby State Forest Weekly Trails Update Trails were last groomed on Friday March 9th. Grooming will not occur until this storm is passed, so expect unpacked powder conditions until tomorrow or Friday. Unfortunately, we are down to the last of our funds in our grooming budget and are unable to get out as often as we would like. March 2nd Trails Update

Willoughby State Forest Weekly Trails Update All the trails have been groomed as of 2/28/2018, which include the Little Loop, Middle Loop, Bartlett Loop, the Connector trail, the CCC road and the Bartlett Mountain rd. Tracks are set on Middle loop along with the two roads. As of Wednesday the trails were in wonderful shape. Even with the warm temperatures there is still a lot of snow left on the groomed trails. 2/23 Trails Update – Poor snow conditions :(

As this photo from our lodge webcam will attest, snow conditions have not been the best! Trails at NorthWoods and at the Willoughby State Forest have NOT been groomed this week, due to poor weather conditions and snowmobile repairs. Keep your fingers crossed for more end of season snow!

Willoughby State Forest Weekly Trails Update All the trails have been groomed as of 1/13/2018, which include the Little Loop, Middle Loop, Bartlett Loop, the Connector trail, the CCC road and the Bartlett Mountain rd. Tracks are set on the Little and Middle loops along with the two roads. As of Tuesday the trails were in wonderful shape with an additional 6-8 inches of powder after the weekend storm. Good News: There are 5 inches of fresh powder out on the trails! Woohoo! Bad News: Our snowmobile has broken down. ☹️ Which means that despite our best laid plans to groom the Mt Hor trails today, it looks like grooming will be on hiatus until the needed repairs occur. We are hoping that will mean we'll be back out by Sunday, but it could be next week. Willoughby State Forest Trails Update The Trails in Willoughby State Forest are ready to go! All the trails have been groomed which include the Little Loop, Middle Loop, Bartlett Loop, the CCC road and the Bartlett Mountain Rd. Tracks are set on the Little and Middle loops along with the two roads. There is about a one foot base and lots of fresh powder out there. We will get another grooming in before Christmas. Wheeler Mountain Trail Work Underway

Changes are coming to Wheeler Mountain that will ensure continued public access for years to come. In an effort coordinated by NorthWoods Stewardship Center, Wheeler Mountain landowner John Krieble has agreed to a public access trail easement in a move that also relocates the lower portion of the Wheeler Mountain Trails onto nearby Willoughby State Forest. The new route will begin at a trailhead parking area, to be constructed this summer, on state lands and bypass the poorly sited parking area in use today.
