FSI Secures Grant Funding for Habitat Improvement

The Forest Stewardship Institute at NorthWoods Stewardship Center was pleased to recently be chosen as a grant recipient by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's New England Forests & Rivers Fund. The $53,000 grant will allow our forestry staff to engage private forest landowners in Northeastern Vermont. The funds will allow us to evaluate landscape- and natural community-level conservation priorities on their lands using the Vermont Conservation Design and other existing data to identify priority habitats and appropriate strategies to benefit multiple species. Friends in the News: Al Robertson Tree Farmer of the Year

Congratulations to Al Robertson for being named 2019 Vermont Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year! This award is given annually by the Vermont Tree Farm Program, and we are excited to hear that Al is this year's awardee. In addition to decades of actively managing his Tree Farm in Sheffield, VT, and his contributions as a member of the Vermont Woodlands Association board and the Vermont State's Private Lands Advisory Committee, Al has been a friend of NorthWoods for many years. Community Celebrates 30 Years of NorthWoods

On Saturday, June 8th, NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston celebrated 30 years of environmental conservation, education and stewardship in the communities of northern New England. Over 150 community members attended the event, which included a free community dinner, live music by celtic ensemble The Wind that Shakes the Barley, and a silent auction featuring items donated by local artisans and businesses. Trevor Evans to Receive 2018 Buzzell Forest Stewardship Award

GOL: Hands-on Learning and Competition in the Woods

This past weekend we hosted our annual spring Game of Logging workshop at NorthWoods. The Game of Logging (GOL) is a chainsaw skills and safety training curriculum developed in the 1960s by Swedish logger and instructor Soren Eriksson, focusing on small hands-on group learning and friendly competition to instill successful chainsaw techniques, felling strategies and safety practices. NorthWoods Adapts to Climate Challenges

The USDA Forest Service has published a new report, New England and Northern New York Forest Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis: A Report from the New England Climate Change Response Framework Project. This report describes how climate change is expected to affect the 40 million acres of forest in our region. Climate change is already having an impact on our forests, increasing damage from extreme precipitation events and insect pests. Take a Look: Low-Impact Forestry in the Works

What are our forestry staff up to this winter? Right now the job is working on a low-impact harvest for a landowner in West Charleston using our tractor and forwarding trailer.
