Forest Management for Bats

Small Mammal Biologist, Alyssa Bennett, recently visited the NorthWoods Stewardship Center to talk about the nine different bat species found in Vermont, their habitat requirements, and some ways that landowners and natural resource professionals may be able to better manage Vermont forests for bats. Many of our bat species are currently listed as threatened or endangered, with white-nose syndrome negatively affecting cave-dwelling species. Citizen Science Opportunity: Collecting Poplar Seeds

Community Celebrates 30 Years of NorthWoods

On Saturday, June 8th, NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston celebrated 30 years of environmental conservation, education and stewardship in the communities of northern New England. Over 150 community members attended the event, which included a free community dinner, live music by celtic ensemble The Wind that Shakes the Barley, and a silent auction featuring items donated by local artisans and businesses. Watershed Crew Tackles Lake Bomoseen Project

In August, the Watershed Conservation Crew finished up a project on Lake Bomoseen.  At the site, they working on encapsulated soil lifts to help rebuild a shoreline. The existing shoreline had been eroding heavily for quite some time and was threatening both the water quality of the lake and the integrity of the road. NorthWoods was brought in to do the installation after receiving an ERP work crew grant that allows us to work on water quality improvement projects throughout the state. New USFWS Partnership Programs in 2017

Since 1999, NorthWoods Stewardship Center has had a long-standing partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to manage Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) crews at National Wildlife Refuges across  New England. Nearly 20 years later, the partnership continues to offer great conservation career  opportunities at several new locations. This year, NorthWoods will manage a YCC Crew at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Vermont and a YCC Crew Leader team at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Downeast Maine. Fall Tree Planting in the CT River Valley

While we often think of springtime as the time for crazy amounts of tree-planting, fall can also be a good time to plant young trees and jump start the restoration of a riparian area. This week, the Conservation Corps finished up a flood plain forest restoration planting of 2300 trees and shrubs along the shores of the CT River in Piedmont, NH. NorthWoods Stewardship Center is honored to welcome US Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) as he joins us on Friday, August 5th, for our 2016 Conservation Corps Season Celebration. Senator Leahy has been an advocate for environmental conservation throughout Vermont and across the United States since gaining office in 1974. An ongoing supporter of conservation efforts along the upper Connecticut River watershed, the Senator helped establish the 26,000 acre Nulhegan basin division of the Silvio O Conte National Wildlife Refuge where youth crews from the NorthWoods Conservation Corps work each summer.
