Winter Trails Update: January 2021

NorthWoods and Willoughby State Forest received about 8 inches of beautiful snow on 1/2/21. However, there was no base prior to this snow. With the exception of some closed trails at both locations, trails are open to the public. Please ski with caution as early season hazards exist, and use snowshoes to prevent postholes in our early season snowpack. Local Afterschool Students Learn About Land Ethic

With many thanks to the VT Land Ethic Partnership for funding this program and to the Echo Lake Protective Association for additional support, the Education department constructed three Leopold benches with a total of 16 students between two afterschool programs. Each bench was placed in a different publicly accessible location between the Brighton and Charleston communities bearing the timeless and wise words of Aldo Leopold. NorthWoods Campus Projects Update

The NorthWoods staff and board are delighted to see significant progress on long-planned infrastructure improvements here on the campus. We’ve got a new roof on our main lodge!  This much needed renovation was supported by funding from the Canaday Family Trust, the USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant, the Northern Vermont Development Association, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and private donors. Welcoming our 2020 Fall Sustainable Forestry Interns

This fall we welcomed another set of new faces to our Sustainable Forestry Internship program, led by FSI Director, Sam Perron. During this 6-week session, interns learn and work alongside staff on forestry, conservation, habitat management and landowner outreach projects. This year's interns have been performing invasive plant control, practicing pre-commercial thinning and low-impact tractor logging, performing wildlife habitat and landscape-level ecological assessments, tree planting, firewood processing, and landowner consulting. 2020 Westmore Mountain Challenge Results

Well the 2020 Westmore Mountain Challenge could not have had more perfect weather or fall foliage! Firstly, a big congratulations to all our hikers -- every year we are blown away by the determination and resilience of our participants who we are proud to say cover the full array of trail enthusiasts, from speed-oriented mountain runners to stop-and-enjoy-the-view hikers and everyone in between. Refuge Reflections: Protecting Plovers

While we often highlight the youth crew leaders and members who train with us and work on USFWS Refuges across New England during the summer season, we also hire for specialty seasonal positions and internships.
