New Summer Corps Initiatives: Springfield MA & Androscoggin River

Through NorthWoods’ long standing partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Corps will manage a Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) crew in Springfield MA this summer. Clyde Pond Wood Duck Nesting Box Survey

Overhunted and near extinction in the early twentieth century, the wood duck population is increasing, however, continued loss of quality habitat remains a threat. In 2005, the NorthWoods Conservation Corps partnered with Great Bay Hydro Corporation to build and install seven wood duck nesting boxes around Clyde Pond in Newport, Vermont as part of Great Bay Hydro Corporation's wildlife habitat improvement efforts. Agnes M. Lindsay Camp Scholarships

Lindsay Foundation to offer scholarships for children attending NorthWoods summer camps, including new Mountain Bike, Earth Sisters, and Science Discovery Camps. Full and partial scholarships are available. Calling Memphremagog Watershed Landowners

With the goal of improving water quality throughout the watershed, the NorthWoods Stewardship Center is coordinating two projects, in partnership with the Orleans County Natural Resources Conservation District (OCNRCD), called the Memphremagog Watershed Lakeshore Buffering Program and Trees for Streams Memphremagog. Both programs are grant-funded and designed to provide cost-shared tree and shrub planting options for landowners with water frontage, be it stream, river, or lake. Buffering shoreline reduces the amount of runoff into lakes and streams, which improves water quality and reduces the threat of algae blooms. NorthWoods Conservation Corps Going To College

Every summer, NorthWoods Stewardship Center recruits local high school students for conservation projects in and beyond the Northeast Kingdom. These teenagers join the NorthWoods Conservation Corps to build trails, improve wildlife habitats, plant trees on river banks, and battle invasive plants. While working in the field, Corps leaders teach crew members about the science behind the work. This year, crew members will be eligible for three undergraduate science credits from Lyndon Sate College (LSC) if they pass the requirements of the Corps projects. Carol Moore Named Executive Director

Dr. Carol A. Moore, former president of Lyndon State College, has been appointed as Executive Director of NorthWoods Stewardship Center by the organization’s Board of Directors. Dr. Moore was officially welcomed by NorthWoods staff and supporters at a reception at NorthWoods on Friday, February 21, 2014. After stepping down as Lyndon State College president in 2011, Dr. Moore became involved with NorthWoods as a volunteer, assisting the Board in finalizing its strategic plan. 3rd Annual Randonnee Rally

NorthWoods Stewardship Center had a great time teaming up with Burke Mountain and Dynafit Sponsors for the 3rd Annual Randonnee Rally, which celebrates speedy ascents and descents of mountains, under human muscle power. There was a great turnout, and the Olympic spirit was felt by all! This year's event was sanctioned by the United States Ski Mountaineering Association.

Orleans County Forester – Passing of the Torch

The NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston is pleased to host an Orleans County Forester meet and greet on Thursday, February 13th at 5pm. Jared Nunery was recently hired by the Vermont Department of Forest, Parks, and Recreation to serve as the first county forester dedicated to Orleans County since the late George Buzzell retired in 2009.
