NorthWoods and MWA to Host Clyde River Wetlands Paddle

NorthWoods Stewardship Center and Memphremagog Watershed Association will host a canoe tour of the Upper Clyde River Wetlands complex -- home to over 100 species of birds and rich flora -- on Friday, July 25th, from 9am to 1pm. Wanted: Citizen Science Volunteers!

If you are a science-minded and outdoor-loving individual, NorthWoods needs your help! We are looking for 2-3 volunteers to help conduct our annual Survivability Study on the trees we've planted in riparian zones in the Memphremagog watershed for the past three springs. Surveys will consist of measuring, photographing and recording data on small trees and shrubs at planting sites throughout the watershed. Burke Town Students Enjoy CT River Paddle

Neither rain, nor wind, nor mosquitos could keep the Burke Town School 7th Graders from enjoying their end of the year trip down the upper reaches of the Connecticut River. NWSC Participates in Summer Food Service Program

NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston, VT is pleased to announce that they will be participating in the Summer Food Service Program for Children funded by the USDA. The program is designed to ensure that children who rely on free or reduced price meals during the school year continue to have adequate nutrition during the summer. NorthWoods hosts summer camps with an emphasis on nature and science inquiry, team building, nature crafting, outdoor play and exploration, recreation and primitive skill-building and connections to the unique natural resources of the Northeast Kingdom. MWA Supports NorthWoods Education Programs

Memphremagog Watershed Association is supporting NorthWoods' environmental education programs again in 2014 with a $500 education award to be used to subsidize local schools and students participating in NorthWoods programs that focus on the watershed.  NorthWoods education staff has the opportunity to connect local youth with their backyard watershed in a variety of ways from an introduction to water quality, to invasive species removal.  In 2013, MWA offered the first education award. Located a stone's throw from the Canadian border, NorthWoods occasionally gets visitors from Quebec visiting our trails and workshops. Less frequently are we featured in Canadian news and publications! Click below to read a story (Or view the PDF here) in Ottawa Outdoors by two Canadians, Glen and Janet Allingham who helped NorthWoods with the restoration of the Bald Mountain cabin in the fall of 2013. We're grateful to our northern neighbors for helping us out on that damp day and for all Canadian visitors who come to appreciate our little slice of the northern forest.

NorthWoods Awarded 2014 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence!

On Wednesday, May 14 the NorthWoods Stewardship Center’s Conservation Corps was presented with the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence at a ceremony at the University of Vermont’s Davis Center in Burlington, Vermont. NorthWoods Awarded Working Lands Grant

The Working Lands Enterprise Board has announced the awarding of a $18,200 grant to NorthWoods Stewardship Center for the purchase of a forwarding trailer and implementation of low-impact timber harvests in the Northeast Kingdom. Vermont Woodlands Association has partnered with NorthWoods in the past to offer educational programs, and will continue to be a key collaborator as demonstration harvests and related workshops develop. NorthWoods is also part of the Vermont Tree Farm Program, which promotes sound forest management and offers a third-party certification opportunity for qualifying landowners with 10 or more acres. Naturalist Notes – Winter Mushrooming

Canada Geese, Robins, Song Sparrows, Red Winged Blackbirds…a cacophony of sounds has just begun anew here at NorthWoods Stewardship Center. You can almost feel the seeds stirring in the soil, and you can definitely taste the sap flowing from our maple trees. (We drink pitchers full of it during staff meetings.) There’s a race among staff to find the first magenta-blossoming Beaked Hazelnut bud, and I’ve heard plans being hatched for whitewater paddling trips.
