Building Resilience: Cenkl’s 2018 VT Climate Run

Our friend and board member Pavel Cenkl is doing it again! In 2015 he ran his first Climate Run - 240km across Iceland from south to north. In 2017 he ran a grueling path on the Arctic Trail through northern Scandinavia. GOL: Hands-on Learning and Competition in the Woods

This past weekend we hosted our annual spring Game of Logging workshop at NorthWoods. The Game of Logging (GOL) is a chainsaw skills and safety training curriculum developed in the 1960s by Swedish logger and instructor Soren Eriksson, focusing on small hands-on group learning and friendly competition to instill successful chainsaw techniques, felling strategies and safety practices. NorthWoods Adapts to Climate Challenges

The USDA Forest Service has published a new report, New England and Northern New York Forest Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis: A Report from the New England Climate Change Response Framework Project. This report describes how climate change is expected to affect the 40 million acres of forest in our region. Climate change is already having an impact on our forests, increasing damage from extreme precipitation events and insect pests. With the end of the 2018 ski season fast approaching, trail grooming has been suspended for the Willoughby State Forest and NorthWoods Stewardship Center trails. Things are looking super on the ski trails after this recent storm (which buried our 'thin cover' signs!)!  All NorthWoods ski trails are groomed, (not track set) on packed powder. Willoughby State Forest was groomed today (3/16) with 3 plus inches of fresh powder. The cold this weekend means the conditions are beautiful and it shouldn't get sticky. Great time to head out for a St. Patrick's Day ski! Enjoy your weekend! Willoughby State Forest Weekly Trails Update Trails were last groomed on Friday March 9th. Grooming will not occur until this storm is passed, so expect unpacked powder conditions until tomorrow or Friday. Unfortunately, we are down to the last of our funds in our grooming budget and are unable to get out as often as we would like. We are hoping to pack the trails down tomorrow and groom this Friday, though it could be the last run of the season. Check back here for updates. March 2nd Trails Update

Willoughby State Forest Weekly Trails Update All the trails have been groomed as of 2/28/2018, which include the Little Loop, Middle Loop, Bartlett Loop, the Connector trail, the CCC road and the Bartlett Mountain rd. Tracks are set on Middle loop along with the two roads. As of Wednesday the trails were in wonderful shape. Even with the warm temperatures there is still a lot of snow left on the groomed trails.
