Corps Improves Water Access at Passumpsic Valley Land Trust Property

Recipient Announced for 2016 George Buzzell Forest Stewardship Award

NorthWoods is pleased to announce that Colleen Goodridge from Albany, VT will be this year's recipient of the George Buzzell Forest Stewardship Award. The award is given annually to a member of the Northeast Kingdom community who has made a positive impact on forestry in the region. Fall Tree Planting in the CT River Valley

While we often think of springtime as the time for crazy amounts of tree-planting, fall can also be a good time to plant young trees and jump start the restoration of a riparian area. This week, the Conservation Corps finished up a flood plain forest restoration planting of 2300 trees and shrubs along the shores of the CT River in Piedmont, NH. Women Can Do: Chainsaw Practice 2016

Enthusiasm wasn’t dampened by a little afternoon rain last Thursday when female high-school students learned how to safely use chainsaws and cut tree cookies at the Women Can Do Expo at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont. The Expo is an annual event put on by Vermont Works for Women, an organization dedicated to helping women advance in non-traditional careers and investing in the next generation of working women. North Country Conservation: Completion of Coös Conservation Projects

Conservation crews from the NorthWoods Stewardship Center recently completed several projects that improve access to New Hampshire’s great outdoors. The work, done in cooperation with local and state partners, includes two segments connected with the 162-mile Cohos Trail and an access area that further improves the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail. All three projects are intended to increase sustainable recreational access in the North Country while protecting natural resources. They also have the benefit of engaging local youth in natural resource education and management. Watershed Crew Protects Local Waters

This summer, a youth conservation crew from NorthWoods Stewardship Center completed several watershed improvement projects in the Passumpsic River Basin thanks to an Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The crew cooperated with local towns, non-profits, and businesses to reduce stormwater erosion, improve water quality, and enhance river access on the Passumpsic. New Trail Opens on Wheeler Mountain

After several months of careful planning and trail work a new route to the top of Wheeler Mountain is ready to open. The new Wheeler Mountain Trail climbs the mountain ridge from the south and replaces the former Red and White Trails, which were plagued by issues of overuse and are now closed. August 11, 2016 My damaged foot and ankle (from my last swim) are good enough to go back to the river. Last Sunday as a test, I am finally around the Holyoke, MA dam. What a world of difference. A very different river, with deeper water, slower current, and lots or recreational stuff: rowing, boating of all types, and many homes. Senator Patrick Leahy Speaks at Conservation Corps Celebration

NorthWoods Stewardship Center was proud to welcome senior U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) to campus on Friday, August 5th, where he spoke to the crowd gathered for the annual Conservation Corps Season Celebration. Over 70 young people and their families were in attendance to hear the senator speak, celebrate the successful end of the 2016 season and participate in a friendly competition of Olympic-style field events.
