NorthWoods – Inspiring Stewardship

2016-12-13T19:11:56-05:00June 1st, 2015|Conservation Corps, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

In the season ahead, students and campers will monkey in the ropes course, hook rainbows in NorthWoods’ pond, and adventure northern forests and rivers. Corps members will abor on trails and wildlife habitats — and cool off at the nearest swimming hole. Your support makes this happen. Individuals and businesses who give to the NorthWoods Annual Fund each year help keep our doors open and our bills paid so our world-class staff can focus on the missionahead. You help us discount field trips, extend camperships, manage on-site trails and inspire all ages to care for our landscape. Please support these inspiring programs [Read More...]

Restoring Water Quality in Northern New England

2016-12-13T19:11:57-05:00May 14th, 2015|Conservation Corps, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

This spring, NorthWoods Stewardship Center has paired up with a number of conservation groups in ongoing efforts to restore forested shorelines along the region’s lakes and streams. Restoration of these forested riparian buffer areas is one of the most cost effective ways to improve water quality by intercepting nutrients, sediments, and other pollutants carried in runoff before they reach the water, thereby avoiding the costly environmental problems seen in Lake Champlain in Vermont. These buffer strips also enhance wildlife habitat values – for fish, birds, and a diversity of other species. Buffers are created by identifying [Read More...]

Protect the Place You Love: Buy It Where You Burn It

2016-12-13T19:11:57-05:00May 11th, 2015|Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Firewood Awareness Week coming to Vermont May 17th through the 23rd. As Memorial Day approaches and the summer camping season gets started, take a moment to think about the places that you love and how you can help to protect them. Chances are that trees make up a key component of these places. A spreading sugar maple, a towering ash; trees are vital to many of the places iconic to Vermont and New England. Unfortunately, many of these trees are at risk from invasive tree pests, such as the emerald ash [Read More...]

On Saturday, May 2nd the chorus of the wood frogs was accompanied by the Hanaford's Fife and Drum Corps as the community celebrated the life of Bill Bevans at NorthWoods. A granite bench built by Senator John Rodgers sits under a transplanted Sugar Maple tree, creating a new space for reflection and inspiration for visitors at NorthWoods. Bill was and is a champion for the human and natural communities of NorthWoods, and all the friends, food, and sunshine that graced the celebration show that Bill's legacy will be long-lasting. First Year of Forwarding is a Success!

2016-12-13T19:11:58-05:00April 17th, 2015|Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Like hauling logs on a smooth packed trail, our 1-year Working Lands grant period went by fast! In April 2014 with funding from the Vermont Working Lands Enterprise Initiative, NorthWoods added a 5-ton log forwarding trailer to our equipment shed. Since then we've completed four low-impact timber harvests, working in the Spitzer Demonstration Forest and with local landowners to enhance forest habitat, improve future timber stand value, and bring sustainably-harvested sawlogs and firewood into NEK wood markets. Check out our final report to the Working Lands board to see photos and [Read More...]

Whooo’s that Newcomer at the Feeder?

2016-12-13T19:11:58-05:00March 20th, 2015|Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Vermont news articles in recent winters have spotlighted the exotic mid-winter visits of snowy owls to our state – often juvenile birds pushed from overcrowded northern territories when the lemmings are lacking. If you look out your window this March, however, you’re more likely to spot a Vermont native owl species – barred owl – perched near your bird feeder. This sort of special appearance has been even more common than usual this spring due to deep snow conditions that have made it more difficult for owls to catch their rodent [Read More...]

NorthWoods is asking YOU to be a forest steward. Northern forests need some heroes. Development and fragmentation, invasive species, and climate change all threaten the vitality of local landscapes. NorthWoods Stewardship Center is on a mission to help children and adults steward their environment. Our new bunkhouse—building in 2015—will bring woodland owners, youth conservation crews, students and resource pros to NorthWoods for hands-on learning in our demonstration forest.     THANK YOU to all of our generous donors who made gifts large and small and not only met our goal of [Read More...]
