Pavel Cenkl – Climate Run 2017 | Arctic Trail

2017-05-01T14:04:05-04:00May 1st, 2017|Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Why run? For NorthWoods Trustee Pavel Cenkl, who will be undertaking a 12-day solo run across Arctic Scandinavia this summer, the answer has many elements. As the Associate Dean of Academics and Director of Athletics at Sterling College, Cenkl aims not only for athletic achievement but to teach, inspire, and help draw attention the effects of climate change as he travels along the 500-mile route which lies within the Arctic Circle. In 2015, Pavel ran a 3-day, 150-mile route south-to-north across Iceland, the first trek in his Climate Run series which aims [Read More...]

Preparing for Climate Change in the Spitzer Forest

2017-03-23T09:18:30-04:00March 23rd, 2017|Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Think the weather's been a little funny lately? According to climate change predictions, we'd better get used to it! NorthWoods forestry staff took that to heart and recently completed the Forest Adaptation Planning and Practices training presented by the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, US Forest Service, and USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub. During the seven-week program, we became well versed in the predicted climate impacts in northern Vermont and used the online NIACS Adaptation Workbook to create an action plan for the Lydia Spitzer Demonstration Forest at NorthWoods. Using [Read More...]

This Week in the Woods: Who’s been chewing this tree?

2017-01-26T10:17:29-05:00January 26th, 2017|Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, News, This Week in the Woods|

Hey, who did that?! While walking in the woods this week, we noticed freshly scraped-off bark at the base of this yellow birch tree. It looks a little bit like abstract wildlife artwork, but in these cold winter months, our Vermont woodland animals are more concerned about… food! The scraping reached about two feet above the snow pack, about the height that a snowshoe hare might reach- our first suspect. But upon closer inspection we found marks from very small teeth, in randomly alternating directions. These marks are characteristic of voles, [Read More...]

Fall Tree Planting in the CT River Valley

2016-12-13T19:11:44-05:00October 28th, 2016|Conservation Corps, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

While we often think of springtime as the time for crazy amounts of tree-planting, fall can also be a good time to plant young trees and jump start the restoration of a riparian area. This week, the Conservation Corps finished up a flood plain forest restoration planting of 2300 trees and shrubs along the shores of the CT River in Piedmont, NH. The 7.5 acre parcel had previously been used as a corn field, but will now be converted back into silver maple flood plain forest  - protecting the water from [Read More...]

Kim explains the saw at the chainless 'safe station'. Enthusiasm wasn’t dampened by a little afternoon rain last Thursday when female high-school students learned how to safely use chainsaws and cut tree cookies at the Women Can Do Expo at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont. The Expo is an annual event put on by Vermont Works for Women, an organization dedicated to helping women advance in non-traditional careers and investing in the next generation of working women. NorthWoods Stewardship Center has participated for the past 6 years running a chainsaw skills [Read More...]

North Country Conservation: Completion of Coös Conservation Projects

2016-12-13T19:11:44-05:00September 20th, 2016|Conservation Corps, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Conservation crews from the NorthWoods Stewardship Center recently completed several projects that improve access to New Hampshire’s great outdoors. The work, done in cooperation with local and state partners, includes two segments connected with the 162-mile Cohos Trail and an access area that further improves the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail. All three projects are intended to increase sustainable recreational access in the North Country while protecting natural resources. They also have the benefit of engaging local youth in natural resource education and management. Earlier this month, NorthWoods finished construction of the 4-mile Trio Trail in the remote [Read More...]

In Pictures: Bunkhouse Construction Under Way!

2016-12-13T19:11:45-05:00July 22nd, 2016|Conservation Corps, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Work began in mid July on excavation and site preparation for a new bunkhouse at the NorthWoods Stewardship Center. The four-season 54 x 24 foot building will include bunks for 18 students and an annex with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and showers. The bunkhouse will expand the Center’s capacity and ability to offer its educational programming over multiple days to groups from a wider geographic area. For over 25 years NorthWoods has provided school and adult education programs as part of its mission of “connecting people and place through education, science, and action”, but groups have been limited to single day [Read More...]

Elm Restoration Update: Tending to the Trees

2016-12-13T19:11:46-05:00July 21st, 2016|Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

American elm, once an iconic species common along Vermont's riversides and in hardwood forests (particularly wetter, nutrient-rich ones), has declined dramatically due to Dutch elm disease over the past century. But with upcoming research about naturally disease resistant American elm varieties, we're optimistic that these trees will be restored as a healthy component of of our Vermont forests. For the past two spring planting seasons NorthWoods has assisted The Nature Conservancy and the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department in planting nearly 2,000 elms and “filler” trees of other species in riparian fields, and this summer we're taking [Read More...]
