2016-12-13T19:12:02-05:00September 17th, 2014|Forest Stewardship Institute|

Thanks to a grant from the Working Lands Enterprise Board earlier this year, NorthWoods has added to our inventory of forestry equipment, and is now offering low-impact timber harvesting as part of our consulting services! With several fall and winter harvests on the calendar, our Forest Stewardship staff will be working in local forests (including the Lydia Spitzer Demonstration Forest) to achieve multiple uses and goals. Our current project in Morgan is focused on creating early-successional wildlife habitat at a scale appropriate to the Vermont landscape, while also extracting low-quality trees [Read More...]

There go Tim & Anika!

2016-12-13T19:12:02-05:00September 9th, 2014|Conservation Corps, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News, Staff|

While the early signs of Fall are emerging around the NorthWoods campus, there are some glaring absences for those of us who make our home or have a habit of visiting here. I have been looking everywhere for flip flops tossed aside by Anika in a barefoot pursuit of some natural wonder, and I've been straining my ears to hear the notes of a ragtime tune played by Tim on his way through the lodge.  In August, Tim and Anika completed their two year terms, representing the 18th [Read More...]

If you are a science-minded and outdoor-loving individual, NorthWoods needs your help! We are looking for 2-3 volunteers to help conduct our annual Survivability Study on the trees we've planted in riparian zones in the Memphremagog watershed for the past three springs. Surveys will consist of measuring, photographing and recording data on small trees and shrubs at planting sites throughout the watershed. Compiled data will help shed light on the overall condition of trees planted at different sites and help inform our tree size and species choices for future riparian plantings. Sharp [Read More...]

Naturalist Notes – Winter Mushrooming

2016-12-13T19:12:09-05:00April 14th, 2014|Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News, Past Events|

Canada Geese, Robins, Song Sparrows, Red Winged Blackbirds…a cacophony of sounds has just begun anew here at NorthWoods Stewardship Center. You can almost feel the seeds stirring in the soil, and you can definitely taste the sap flowing from our maple trees. (We drink pitchers full of it during staff meetings.) There’s a race among staff to find the first magenta-blossoming Beaked Hazelnut bud, and I’ve heard plans being hatched for whitewater paddling trips. Every day it feels like spring is offering a new spark of life for us to enjoy. Incredibly, only a few weeks [Read More...]

Clyde Pond Wood Duck Nesting Box Survey

2016-12-13T19:12:10-05:00April 14th, 2014|Conservation Corps, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Steve Farrow installing a Wood Duck Box, 2006. Overhunted and near extinction in the early twentieth century, the wood duck population is increasing, however, continued loss of quality habitat remains a threat. In 2005, the NorthWoods Conservation Corps partnered with Great Bay Hydro Corporation to build and install seven wood duck nesting boxes around Clyde Pond in Newport, Vermont as part of Great Bay Hydro Corporation's wildlife habitat improvement efforts. Wood ducks have very specific nesting requirements—flooded woodland or vegetated wetlands—and the undeveloped shoreline of Clyde Pond is ideal. Thanks to financial [Read More...]
