2015 Conservation Corps Celebration

The NorthWoods Conservation Corps completed a busy 6-week summer field season on Friday August 7 with a gathering of ten crews from throughout New England. Eighty-six young people participated in the Corps this season--the largest in many years. Crews operated up and down the Connecticut River Valley and in remote corners of Vermont and New Hampshire- improving wildlife habitats, building and maintaining trails, and increasing access to our natural areas. Knotweed Photo Volunteers Wanted

The NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston Vermont, and the Upper Connecticut River Watershed Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (UCCISMA) are seeking volunteers to take some photos! We need people who are willing to visit our identified Japanese Knotweed treatment sites to take GPS points and photo points so we can have have documentation of pre-treatment and post-treatment conditions. There are sites in both northern New Hampshire and northeastern Vermont, all within the Upper Connecticut River Watershed. Some sites are accessible by car while others require a short walk or canoe. NorthWoods Welcomes AmeriCorps NCCC Moose One Team

AmeriCorps volunteers have long been a cornerstone of NorthWoods projects and programming, but new this year, NorthWoods is fortunate to host nine members of the AmeriCorps NCCC Atlantic Region Moose One Team. DEC Restoration Grant Supports NorthWoods Watershed Work

A conservation crew from NorthWoods Stewardship Center will be completing two weeks of watershed work this summer thanks to an Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The crew—based in the Caledonia County village of East Burke—will address stormwater impairments in the Passumpsic River watershed, including projects in Burke and Newark. Stormwater runoff is a major contributor to soil erosion, sedimentation and water pollution. NorthWoods Recieves VCF Grant for Citizen Science Study

NorthWoods receives grant from the Vermont Community Foundation to Train Citizen Scientists to Study Area Reptiles and Amphibians The NorthWoods Stewardship Center recently received a $2,060 grant from the Vermont Community Foundation’s Small and Inspiring grant program. The grant will help further NorthWood’s mission of “connecting people and place through science, education, and action.” According to NorthWoods Operations Director Jayson Benoit, “people are usually surprised to hear how little is known about populations of even the most common reptile and amphibian species in northeastern Vermont, like garter snake and painted turtle. Remembering Bill Bevans

On Saturday, May 2nd the chorus of the wood frogs was accompanied by the Hanaford's Fife and Drum Corps as the community celebrated the life of Bill Bevans at NorthWoods. A granite bench built by Senator John Rodgers sits under a transplanted Sugar Maple tree, creating a new space for reflection and inspiration for visitors at NorthWoods. VCF Grant Supports NorthWoods Ski Programs

The NorthWoods Community and Mother Nature teamed up to start the year with a better-than-ever ski season here at the Center. In winter, cross-country skis are THE vehicle for outdoor study and exploration, but our equipment had been in poor repair.
