The insect itself is only able to fly short distances, and the [Read More...]

The Conservation Corps fall crew is wrapping up a busy field season filled with projects across the Northeast Kingdom. The crew worked in partnership with private landowners and the Essex County Natural Resources Conservation District (ECNRCD) to tackle water quality and erosion issues at Maidstone Lake by building rain gardens, infiltration steps, driveway waterbars, dripline trenches, planting trees and shrubs, and improving drainages. This work was made possible with funding provided by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) grant. Farther south, the crew built a river access [Read More...]

2017-10-26T14:00:02-04:00October 26th, 2017|Conservation Corps, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

On October 24th, NorthWoods invited VT FPR Commissioner Michael Snyder to campus to converse with staff about the outdoor recreation movement in the NEK and throughout Vermont. The group discussed the history of the department, and that while FPR stands for Forest, Parks and Recreation, throughout history not much attention has been made on the state level to Recreation. In an effort to address this, Governor Scott has recently instituted the Vermont Outdoor Recreation Economic Collaborative (VOREC) – a public forum attempting to make living and recreating in Vermont more collaborative. NorthWoods needs your help to steward the trails in our 1,500 acre forest. Our Hopkins Hill Trail has become rutted from unauthorized ATVs and off-road vehicle use. While we recognize that off-roading is one way to enjoy the outdoors, recreational motorized vehicles are prohibited from trails on the NorthWoods property. This includes the trail extending from Hopkins Hill Rd (0.3 miles from the Tripp Hill Rd intersection) to Calhoun Rd (0.25 miles beyond last house on Calhoun Rd). Both ends of this trail (0.3 mile and 0.25 mile segments) are designated [Read More...]

2017-01-26T10:17:29-05:00January 26th, 2017|Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, News, This Week in the Woods|

Hey, who did that?! While walking in the woods this week, we noticed freshly scraped-off bark at the base of this yellow birch tree. It looks a little bit like abstract wildlife artwork, but in these cold winter months, our Vermont woodland animals are more concerned about… food! The scraping reached about two feet above the snow pack, about the height that a snowshoe hare might reach- our first suspect. But upon closer inspection we found marks from very small teeth, in randomly alternating directions. These marks are characteristic of voles, [Read More...]
