2015 Conservation Corps Celebration

The NorthWoods Conservation Corps completed a busy 6-week summer field season on Friday August 7 with a gathering of ten crews from throughout New England. Eighty-six young people participated in the Corps this season--the largest in many years. Crews operated up and down the Connecticut River Valley and in remote corners of Vermont and New Hampshire- improving wildlife habitats, building and maintaining trails, and increasing access to our natural areas. Middle Mountain Trail Route Now Open

NorthWoods is pleased to announce a major milestone in NEK trail work – the completion of the Middle Mountain Trail in Warren’s Gore and Avery’s Gore. The project is part of a long range plan and partnership involving NorthWoods, Green Mountain Club, Vermont Forests, Parks and Recreation, and the private timberland owners to develop hiking trails on the former Champion Lands (now known as the Kingdom Heritage Lands). Knotweed Photo Volunteers Wanted

The NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston Vermont, and the Upper Connecticut River Watershed Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (UCCISMA) are seeking volunteers to take some photos! We need people who are willing to visit our identified Japanese Knotweed treatment sites to take GPS points and photo points so we can have have documentation of pre-treatment and post-treatment conditions. There are sites in both northern New Hampshire and northeastern Vermont, all within the Upper Connecticut River Watershed. Some sites are accessible by car while others require a short walk or canoe. NorthWoods Welcomes AmeriCorps NCCC Moose One Team

AmeriCorps volunteers have long been a cornerstone of NorthWoods projects and programming, but new this year, NorthWoods is fortunate to host nine members of the AmeriCorps NCCC Atlantic Region Moose One Team. DEC Restoration Grant Supports NorthWoods Watershed Work

A conservation crew from NorthWoods Stewardship Center will be completing two weeks of watershed work this summer thanks to an Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The crew—based in the Caledonia County village of East Burke—will address stormwater impairments in the Passumpsic River watershed, including projects in Burke and Newark. Stormwater runoff is a major contributor to soil erosion, sedimentation and water pollution. Vermont Recreation Trails Program Supports Corps

NorthWoods Stewardship Center is pleased to announce the receipt of several grants supporting trail construction and maintenance in the Northeast Kingdom. The funding, provided by the Vermont Recreation Trails Program (RTP), supports the efforts of the NorthWoods Conservation Corps to provide hands-on service learning opportunities to local young people ages 15-20. The RTP grants, administered by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, will fund nine weeks of crew work in Willoughby State Forest and the Kingdom Heritage Lands (former Champion Lands) in northern Essex County. Restoring Water Quality in Northern New England

This spring, NorthWoods Stewardship Center has paired up with a number of conservation groups in ongoing efforts to restore forested shorelines along the region’s lakes and streams. Restoration of these forested riparian buffer areas is one of the most cost effective ways to improve water quality by intercepting nutrients, sediments, and other pollutants carried in runoff before they reach the water, thereby avoiding the costly environmental problems seen in Lake Champlain in Vermont.
