Seeking Landowners for Water Quality Improvement Projects

NorthWoods is seeking landowners who are interested in designing water quality improvement projects on their lakeshore. Through a 2017-2018 Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) Grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VT DEC), NorthWoods Stewardship Center is able to provide free designs of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for lakeshore landowners on Echo Lake and Seymour Lake. BMPs protect and improve water quality in our lakes by reducing stormwater runoff and sediment loading from lakeshore properties. Watershed Crew Tackles Lake Bomoseen Project

In August, the Watershed Conservation Crew finished up a project on Lake Bomoseen.  At the site, they working on encapsulated soil lifts to help rebuild a shoreline. The existing shoreline had been eroding heavily for quite some time and was threatening both the water quality of the lake and the integrity of the road. NorthWoods Newest Crew is for Water Quality Warriors

The NorthWoods Stewardship Center’s Conservation Corps program has a 22-year history of employing local youth to work on priority conservation projects in communities throughout the region with a special focus on the northeast kingdom. The Corps builds and improves hiking trails, manages exotic invasive species, plants riparian buffers, and improves wildlife habitat, and supports ecosystem resilience. Help Protect Our Trails

NorthWoods needs your help to steward the trails in our 1,500 acre forest. Our Hopkins Hill Trail has become rutted from unauthorized ATVs and off-road vehicle use. While we recognize that off-roading is one way to enjoy the outdoors, recreational motorized vehicles are prohibited from trails on the NorthWoods property. This includes the trail extending from Hopkins Hill Rd (0.3 miles from the Tripp Hill Rd intersection) to Calhoun Rd (0.25 miles beyond last house on Calhoun Rd). New USFWS Partnership Programs in 2017

Since 1999, NorthWoods Stewardship Center has had a long-standing partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to manage Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) crews at National Wildlife Refuges across  New England. Nearly 20 years later, the partnership continues to offer great conservation career  opportunities at several new locations. This year, NorthWoods will manage a YCC Crew at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Vermont and a YCC Crew Leader team at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Downeast Maine. Fall Tree Planting in the CT River Valley

While we often think of springtime as the time for crazy amounts of tree-planting, fall can also be a good time to plant young trees and jump start the restoration of a riparian area. This week, the Conservation Corps finished up a flood plain forest restoration planting of 2300 trees and shrubs along the shores of the CT River in Piedmont, NH. North Country Conservation: Completion of Coös Conservation Projects

Conservation crews from the NorthWoods Stewardship Center recently completed several projects that improve access to New Hampshire’s great outdoors. The work, done in cooperation with local and state partners, includes two segments connected with the 162-mile Cohos Trail and an access area that further improves the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail. All three projects are intended to increase sustainable recreational access in the North Country while protecting natural resources. They also have the benefit of engaging local youth in natural resource education and management.
