Workshop teacher Larry Walters measures crosscut blades. The Conservation Corps team had fun this February attending a two-day Cross Cut Sharpening and Maintenance course hosted by Larry Walters of Rutland, VT, a former U.S. Forest Service employee. Larry was a wealth of knowledge in the realm of crosscut saws, their maintenance, and the precision-based tools that are involved in the process of sharpening them. Charles Hill

Charles Hill was born and raised on the shoreline of Connecticut in the town of Clinton. His love for the outdoors started when he was in the Boy Scouts where hiking and camping became hobbies that he enjoyed outside of the Scouts. Dusty May was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, but has lived in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont for 8 years and has discovered that he is a Vermonter at heart. Pro Crew Provides Expertise on Historic Old Bridle Path

The NorthWoods Conservation Corps Pro Crew, whose season extends through the autumn, has been hard at work in the Whites for the past three weeks, restoring the Old Bridle Path on Mt. Lafayette in partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club and the US Forest Service. NVU Announces Sustainable Trail Building Education Partnership

Lyndonville, VT – Northern Vermont University’s Center for Professional Studies announces a collaboration with the NorthWoods Stewardship Center to offer a hands-on Sustainable Trail Building Certificate program of study at the conservation organization’s site in East Charleston, Vt. Women’s Crew Digs in on NEK Trails

The Women's Crew has been making a splash as NorthWoods' newest local day crew, working on projects throughout the NEK. Women have long made up a larger-than-usual proportion of NorthWoods crews and staff at large but this is the first year the organization has hosted a women's-only crew, consisting of three college-age leaders and three high-school-age members. Crew leader Ash Cray has previously led crews for other organizations and said she experienced many challenges being respected as a woman in a male-dominated field. $10,000 Grant Supports Program Gear Purchases

Thanks to the generosity of a $10,000 grant from Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor Fund, NorthWoods will have the opportunity to update and upgrade our crew and project equipment for the 2022 field season. Our Conservation Corps, Forestry, Conservation Science and Education staff work hard and while we take care of our equipment, we also put it through its paces! Snow cover is still thin around the region, but there is plenty to explore. At our three nordic hubs, we've begun to pack in the base with the snowmobile and roller, but will need more snow to commence full grooming operations. Every year, NorthWoods hires interns for service at National Fish and Wildlife Refuges around the northeast. These interns work closely with refuge staff in specialty fields, often performing direct bird and wildlife observation and conservation efforts in beautiful locations around our region.
