First Year of Forwarding is a Success!

2016-12-13T19:11:58-05:00April 17th, 2015|Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Like hauling logs on a smooth packed trail, our 1-year Working Lands grant period went by fast! In April 2014 with funding from the Vermont Working Lands Enterprise Initiative, NorthWoods added a 5-ton log forwarding trailer to our equipment shed. Since then we've completed four low-impact timber harvests, working in the Spitzer Demonstration Forest and with local landowners to enhance forest habitat, improve future timber stand value, and bring sustainably-harvested sawlogs and firewood into NEK wood markets. Check out our final report to the Working Lands board to see photos and [Read More...]

Updated Spitzer Forest Management Plan Released

2016-12-13T19:11:58-05:00April 17th, 2015|Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

View the map Read the plan How do you keep track of 1,500 acres of working forestland, wetlands, unique ecological areas and open land? Our Forest Stewardship staff recently finished an updated management plan for the Lydia Spitzer Demonstration Forest. As required every 10 years for enrollment in the Vermont Current Use program and the NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program, we spent several weeks last summer in the woods collecting data, taking notes and revisiting permanent monitoring plots and even more winter office time analyzing what we [Read More...]

Planning Family Forests: How to Keep Woodlands Intact and in the Family by Thom J. McEvoy In his seventh forestry book, Professor McEvoy after 9 years of research compiles stories of forest-owning families representing every major timber type in the United States; narratives and analyses that tell the trials, missteps and successes of an older generation of woodland owners sufficiently committed to keeping their forests intact and in the family. Anyone who wishes to control and keep their forests in their family forever MUST read this book before another day passes [Read More...]

Introduction to Forest Ecology and Silviculture

2018-04-09T17:24:55-04:00April 16th, 2015|NorthWoods Store, Publications|

Introduction to Forest Ecology and Silviculture Third Edition. by Thom J. McEvoy Forest ecology is the study of life in areas where the predominant vegetation is trees. The word ecology is derived from an ancient Greek word oikos, meaning" house," and the suffix ology, meaning "study of." The central idea of viewing a community of plants and animals - that exist in the same place and time - as a house is crucial to understanding how ecology relates to forest management practices and timber harvesting. Just as members of a household influence [Read More...]

Whooo’s that Newcomer at the Feeder?

2016-12-13T19:11:58-05:00March 20th, 2015|Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Vermont news articles in recent winters have spotlighted the exotic mid-winter visits of snowy owls to our state – often juvenile birds pushed from overcrowded northern territories when the lemmings are lacking. If you look out your window this March, however, you’re more likely to spot a Vermont native owl species – barred owl – perched near your bird feeder. This sort of special appearance has been even more common than usual this spring due to deep snow conditions that have made it more difficult for owls to catch their rodent [Read More...]

#MyWoods Bunkhouse Campaign

2016-12-13T19:11:58-05:00February 22nd, 2015|Conservation Corps, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News, Support Us|

NorthWoods is asking YOU to be a forest steward. Northern forests need some heroes. Development and fragmentation, invasive species, and climate change all threaten the vitality of local landscapes. NorthWoods Stewardship Center is on a mission to help children and adults steward their environment. Our new bunkhouse—building in 2015—will bring woodland owners, youth conservation crews, students and resource pros to NorthWoods for hands-on learning in our demonstration forest.     THANK YOU to all of our generous donors who made gifts large and small and not only met our goal of [Read More...]

VCF Grant Supports NorthWoods Ski Programs

2016-12-13T19:12:00-05:00February 5th, 2015|Education, Highlights, News|

The NorthWoods Community and Mother Nature teamed up to start the year with a better-than-ever ski season here at the Center. In winter, cross-country skis are THE vehicle for outdoor study and exploration, but our equipment had been in poor repair. On our 25th birthday in 2014, we made a wish to update our ski fleet to better serve young children and novice skiers, and you helped make it come true. NorthWoods 2014-2015 Winter Education received grants from the Vermont Community Foundation’s Northeast Kingdom Fund, Ben & Jerry’s Community Action Grants program, and The Norcross Wildlife Foundation, [Read More...]

January 30th Trail Report

2016-12-13T19:12:00-05:00February 5th, 2015|News, Trail Reports|

So Far, So Great! The snow keeps coming and, even though we were spared the brunt of the recent Nor'easter, the inches are adding up to feet. As mid-winter approaches, our snowbase is a solid 24 inches and I think it's safe to say we no longer have 'early season conditions'. In fact, it's fair to say we have great mid-winter conditions which means our Nordic trails are in prime shape! If you can suffer the cold or wait it out, we welcome you all to join us for some great [Read More...]

Thanks to Vermont PBS, NorthWoods is featured in a new season episode of Vermont Outdoor Journal. Program host Lawrence Pyne explores the trail building process while hiking the new Middle Mountain Trail being built by the NorthWoods Conservation Corps Backcountry Crew in the remote forests of Avery's Gore. The program demonstrates how multiple partners, including NorthWoods Stewardship Center, Green Mountain Club, Vermont Forest, Parks and Recreation and Plum Creek Timber Company have come together to develop trails on the Kingdom Heritage Lands in far northeastern Vermont. Interviews with NorthWoods Trails Director [Read More...]
