Volunteer Gardeners Wanted!

NorthWoods' flowerbeds benefit insects and birds and provide a beautiful backdrop for school programs, camps and community events. We rely on volunteer help to keep them looking their best. Our neighbor and favorite green-thumb Sue Dwelle has started the spring clean-up and made a list of projects for the season. Vermont Recreation Trails Program Supports Corps

NorthWoods Stewardship Center is pleased to announce the receipt of several grants supporting trail construction and maintenance in the Northeast Kingdom. The funding, provided by the Vermont Recreation Trails Program (RTP), supports the efforts of the NorthWoods Conservation Corps to provide hands-on service learning opportunities to local young people ages 15-20. The RTP grants, administered by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, will fund nine weeks of crew work in Willoughby State Forest and the Kingdom Heritage Lands (former Champion Lands) in northern Essex County. NorthWoods Recieves VCF Grant for Citizen Science Study

NorthWoods receives grant from the Vermont Community Foundation to Train Citizen Scientists to Study Area Reptiles and Amphibians The NorthWoods Stewardship Center recently received a $2,060 grant from the Vermont Community Foundation’s Small and Inspiring grant program. Restoring Water Quality in Northern New England

This spring, NorthWoods Stewardship Center has paired up with a number of conservation groups in ongoing efforts to restore forested shorelines along the region’s lakes and streams. Restoration of these forested riparian buffer areas is one of the most cost effective ways to improve water quality by intercepting nutrients, sediments, and other pollutants carried in runoff before they reach the water, thereby avoiding the costly environmental problems seen in Lake Champlain in Vermont. Remembering Bill Bevans

On Saturday, May 2nd the chorus of the wood frogs was accompanied by the Hanaford's Fife and Drum Corps as the community celebrated the life of Bill Bevans at NorthWoods. A granite bench built by Senator John Rodgers sits under a transplanted Sugar Maple tree, creating a new space for reflection and inspiration for visitors at NorthWoods. Bill was and is a champion for the human and natural communities of NorthWoods, and all the friends, food, and sunshine that graced the celebration show that Bill's legacy will be long-lasting. First Year of Forwarding is a Success!

Like hauling logs on a smooth packed trail, our 1-year Working Lands grant period went by fast! In April 2014 with funding from the Vermont Working Lands Enterprise Initiative, NorthWoods added a 5-ton log forwarding trailer to our equipment shed. Since then we've completed four low-impact timber harvests, working in the Spitzer Demonstration Forest and with local landowners to enhance forest habitat, improve future timber stand value, and bring sustainably-harvested sawlogs and firewood into NEK wood markets.
