Accepting Nominations for 3rd Annual Buzzell Award

NorthWoods Stewardship Center is pleased to accept nominations for the third annual George Buzzell Forest Stewardship Award. In honor of the esteemed county forester for which it is named, this award recognizes an individual who is making a positive impact on Northeast Kingdom forests. The award will be given at the Annual Stewardship Celebration at NorthWoods, on Friday, October 23rd. 126 Campers, 9 Camps, 2 months…

This summer at NorthWoods went by in a flash! We reached a new record of 126 campers enrolled in 9 different camps, from ages 4-15, up from 112 total enrolled in 2014. This year our camps included Advanced Survival, Junior Survival, Nature Day, Wild Science Discovery, Earth Sisters, two NFCT camps and two Mountain Bike Camps at Burke Mountain. At Wild Science Discovery Camp, students learned about making predictions based on the scientific method, then tested their hypotheses among professional biologists, right on the NorthWoods campus. NorthWoods was proud to be a recipient of a Vermont Community Foundation grant this spring. 2015 Conservation Corps Celebration

The NorthWoods Conservation Corps completed a busy 6-week summer field season on Friday August 7 with a gathering of ten crews from throughout New England. Eighty-six young people participated in the Corps this season--the largest in many years. Crews operated up and down the Connecticut River Valley and in remote corners of Vermont and New Hampshire- improving wildlife habitats, building and maintaining trails, and increasing access to our natural areas. Middle Mountain Trail Route Now Open

NorthWoods is pleased to announce a major milestone in NEK trail work – the completion of the Middle Mountain Trail in Warren’s Gore and Avery’s Gore. The project is part of a long range plan and partnership involving NorthWoods, Green Mountain Club, Vermont Forests, Parks and Recreation, and the private timberland owners to develop hiking trails on the former Champion Lands (now known as the Kingdom Heritage Lands). Knotweed Photo Volunteers Wanted

The NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston Vermont, and the Upper Connecticut River Watershed Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (UCCISMA) are seeking volunteers to take some photos! We need people who are willing to visit our identified Japanese Knotweed treatment sites to take GPS points and photo points so we can have have documentation of pre-treatment and post-treatment conditions. There are sites in both northern New Hampshire and northeastern Vermont, all within the Upper Connecticut River Watershed. Some sites are accessible by car while others require a short walk or canoe. NorthWoods Welcomes AmeriCorps NCCC Moose One Team

AmeriCorps volunteers have long been a cornerstone of NorthWoods projects and programming, but new this year, NorthWoods is fortunate to host nine members of the AmeriCorps NCCC Atlantic Region Moose One Team. DEC Restoration Grant Supports NorthWoods Watershed Work

A conservation crew from NorthWoods Stewardship Center will be completing two weeks of watershed work this summer thanks to an Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The crew—based in the Caledonia County village of East Burke—will address stormwater impairments in the Passumpsic River watershed, including projects in Burke and Newark. Stormwater runoff is a major contributor to soil erosion, sedimentation and water pollution. Forest Guild Recognizes Spitzer Demonstration Forest

NorthWoods was recently recognized by the Forest Guild for our work in the Lydia Spitzer Demonstration Forest with our enrollment in the Forest Guild Model Forest program. The mission of the Model Forest program is to "recognize places, people, and relationships that foster sustainable forest management and demonstrate successful silviculture," falling in perfect alignment with our own goals for the Spitzer Forest.
