Preparing for Climate Change in the Spitzer Forest

Think the weather's been a little funny lately? According to climate change predictions, we'd better get used to it! NorthWoods forestry staff took that to heart and recently completed the Forest Adaptation Planning and Practices training presented by the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, US Forest Service, and USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub. New USFWS Partnership Programs in 2017

Since 1999, NorthWoods Stewardship Center has had a long-standing partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to manage Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) crews at National Wildlife Refuges across  New England. Nearly 20 years later, the partnership continues to offer great conservation career  opportunities at several new locations. This year, NorthWoods will manage a YCC Crew at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Vermont and a YCC Crew Leader team at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Downeast Maine. This Week in the Woods: Who’s been chewing this tree?

Hey, who did that?! While walking in the woods this week, we noticed freshly scraped-off bark at the base of this yellow birch tree. It looks a little bit like abstract wildlife artwork, but in these cold winter months, our Vermont woodland animals are more concerned about… food! The scraping reached about two feet above the snow pack, about the height that a snowshoe hare might reach- our first suspect. Corps Improves Water Access at Passumpsic Valley Land Trust Property

Fall Tree Planting in the CT River Valley

While we often think of springtime as the time for crazy amounts of tree-planting, fall can also be a good time to plant young trees and jump start the restoration of a riparian area. This week, the Conservation Corps finished up a flood plain forest restoration planting of 2300 trees and shrubs along the shores of the CT River in Piedmont, NH. Women Can Do: Chainsaw Practice 2016

Enthusiasm wasn’t dampened by a little afternoon rain last Thursday when female high-school students learned how to safely use chainsaws and cut tree cookies at the Women Can Do Expo at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont. The Expo is an annual event put on by Vermont Works for Women, an organization dedicated to helping women advance in non-traditional careers and investing in the next generation of working women. North Country Conservation: Completion of Coös Conservation Projects

Conservation crews from the NorthWoods Stewardship Center recently completed several projects that improve access to New Hampshire’s great outdoors. The work, done in cooperation with local and state partners, includes two segments connected with the 162-mile Cohos Trail and an access area that further improves the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail. All three projects are intended to increase sustainable recreational access in the North Country while protecting natural resources. They also have the benefit of engaging local youth in natural resource education and management. Watershed Crew Protects Local Waters

This summer, a youth conservation crew from NorthWoods Stewardship Center completed several watershed improvement projects in the Passumpsic River Basin thanks to an Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP) grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The crew cooperated with local towns, non-profits, and businesses to reduce stormwater erosion, improve water quality, and enhance river access on the Passumpsic.
