Can I Hike? Keeping Our Trails in Shape.

2019-05-14T17:49:40-04:00May 14th, 2019|Highlights, News|

As the weather turns warm and the first flush of color starts to turn the mountains green, many of us start thinking about lacing up our hiking boots and heading to our latest trail to take in the view. But wait! Spring hiking, while tempting, can cause alot of damage to our public trails, as visitors struggle up steep, saturated ground, walk around mud patches onto protected vegetation, and generally tear up soft, wet trails that our crews have worked hard to improve. While you may think 'I'm just one person, [Read More...]

The Conservation Corps is gearing up for the season and has already begun spring projects. In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Faulkner Island Lighthouse Brigade, the Corps built a 60-foot brick walkway leading up to Connecticut’s second oldest lighthouse on Faulkner Island in Long Island Sound. The lighthouse, built in 1802 and commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, still serves as a navigational aid to boats passing through the sound. The island is a part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, and is [Read More...]

Ask Oberon: Knocking for Love

2019-04-30T09:57:42-04:00April 30th, 2019|Ask Oberon, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Dear Oberon, Why do woodpeckers keep pecking on my metal roof and stovepipe where there aren’t any bugs? Sincerely, Bang Bang Bang Dear Bang Bang Bang, Your pseudonym is more apt than you know. I’m no ornithologist or melittologist, but I can tell you that the answer to your question involves both birds and bees. The period between Late April and the end of May is the woodpecker’s usual mating season. During mating season, male woodpeckers have discovered that hitting their beaks on pieces of metal makes the sound of their [Read More...]

Dear Oberon, Every Winter I seem to fall ill at least once or twice, and my friends say it is because I spend too much time outside in the cold. 2019-01-24T15:00:34-05:00January 24th, 2019|Ask Oberon, Education, Forest Stewardship Institute, Highlights, News|

Dear Oberon, Mine is a two-part question. How did you come to live at NorthWoods, and why is your name Oberon? Thanks, Who Are You Dear Who Are You, Thanks for asking! “Who am I?” is a question that has stumped owl philosophers for many moons, as I’m sure it has the human variety. While delving deeply into this question on a metaphysical level may cover the pages of several books and screenplays, in order to answer this question in the form of a letter, I will simply give you my [Read More...]
