Maria Young to Begin Tenure as New Executive Director at NorthWoods

On March 1, the nonprofit conservation organization NorthWoods Stewardship Center will have a new Executive Director. Maria Young, who has served the organization for over 10 years as Education Director, will take the helm. Sense of Place for the Second Leadership Institute Session

Allen Yale to Receive 7th Annual George Buzzell Forest Stewardship Award

The NorthWoods Stewardship Center is pleased to announce that Allen Yale of Derby, VT will receive the 7th annual George Buzzell Forest Stewardship Award. The award is given to a person who has made significant contributions to sustainable forestry and education in the Northeast Kingdom. The cross-country ski season has been a bit slower to start than usual at our campus in East Charleston, with low snowfall and warm temperatures, but as of January 5th, our on-site trails are groomed and ready for visitors! Bio Facts & Oberon Has a Spa Day

Oberon gets a health check and talon trim thanks to our friends Nathan and Grae from VINS. On December 12, Nathan Thoele and Grae O'Toole from the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) made the trip up from Quechee, VT to check on the health of our beloved ambassador owl, Oberon. Nathan is a NorthWoods’ Conservation Corps and AmeriCorps alum, and was Oberon's caretaker during his time with us before moving on to become an Environmental Educator at VINS. NorthWoods Receives VCF Grant to Build Low-Ropes Course

The NorthWoods Stewardship Center is pleased to announce the receipt a $5,000 grant from the Vermont Community Foundation's Northeast Kingdom Fund. This grant will allow NorthWoods to update and grow their low-ropes course in order to provide expanded features to visitors of all ages from local schools, organizations and businesses around the state. The current ropes course, located in the Center's red pine plantation, was installed in the 1990s and is used with more than 1,000 individuals annually. It’s a Wrap! – 2019 Westmore Mountain Challenge

The 2019 Westmore Mountain Challenge was a great success - our fastest finisher, Andrew MacGibbon, beat out the 2018 fastest time by over an hour at 3:57 - he took us so off guard back at the finish that we had to rush to set up our timing tent! We were especially proud to have some NorthWoods home team staff members, Kenyon Fatt and Caleb Kessler also beat out last year's fastest time, coming in 2nd and 3rd overall at 4:22 and 4:29 respectively. FSI Secures Grant Funding for Habitat Improvement

The Forest Stewardship Institute at NorthWoods Stewardship Center was pleased to recently be chosen as a grant recipient by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's New England Forests & Rivers Fund. The $53,000 grant will allow our forestry staff to engage private forest landowners in Northeastern Vermont. The funds will allow us to evaluate landscape- and natural community-level conservation priorities on their lands using the Vermont Conservation Design and other existing data to identify priority habitats and appropriate strategies to benefit multiple species. NEK Leadership Institute – Now Accepting Applications
