Have you been looking for a way to get out and enjoy the winter days honing your bird-watching (and listening) skills? Join in the 125th Audubon Christmas Bird Count! This massive and long-running citizen science event is held every year throughout North America and provides important data on bird populations.
This year’s Island Pond CBC will be held on Thursday, December 19. Storm date is the 20th.
The IP CBC allows you to be on the lookout for less-common boreal species if you are at count spots near the Nulhegan Basin– considered an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. Birds recorded in the past include spruce grouse, black-backed woodpecker, boreal chickadee, rusty blackbird, and saw-whet owl, alongside dozens of other species.
To join in the fun, gather your warm-weather gear, grab your binoculars, and contact organizer Bob Stymeist (bobstymeist@gmail.com) to learn more details and arrange meet-up times and your observation location.
