The Ecosystem Restoration Program Grant (ERP), administered by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, provides funding to programs restoring and maintaining the water quality of Vermont.
In past years, NorthWoods subcontracted with the Orleans County Natural Resources Conservation District (OCNRCD) to restore riparian habitat on stream and lake shores in the Memphremagog watershed. This year, with the support of the OCNRCD, NorthWoods successfully applied for the ERP grant directly and will now be running both the Trees for Streams Magog and Lakeshore Buffering program for 2015. These programs consist of planting at least 4 acres of trees in stream side riparian zones and planting 6 sites on lakeshore edges, as well as monitoring stream-side tree success with survivability studies.
The goal is to improve stream and lake edge stability, reduce toxic runoff into streams and lakes, and improve habitat for fish and wildlife by improving riparian habitat.
